Benefits of Clinical Ladder

For RNs, Clinical Ladder creates the opportunity to advance the nurse’s skills and career, while simultaneously allowing the nurse to stay at the bedside. The skills acquired as part of the Clinical Ladder program can be utilized in leadership positions involving project management, team building, supervisor roles, process improvement, and unit outcomes.

Increased advancement also means increased compensation. Clinical Nurse II has an increased salary of $2,300 per year. Clinical Nurse II to Clinical Nurse III also has an increase of $2,300 per year (as of 2022 contract).


Clinical Nurse II Requirements

  1. Education/Practice

    • BSN Required

    • Minimum of 2 years of nursing practice

  2. Advancement/Maintenance

    • 12 Contact Hours or 3 Academic Credits

    • Performance Improvement Project (approved by PCD/Supervisor)

3. Shared Knowledge (Must complete 2)

    • Conduct three different unit-based in-services with Nursing Educator collaboration during the year. Submit materials used.

    • Present poster to Unit Staff or Hospital Forum or Grand Rounds

    • Submit evidence-based article to a peer-reviewed journal

4. Council/Committee Participation

  • Attend 80% of monthly meetings

5. Preceptor

  • Precept Students or orientees for a minimum of 35 hours


Clinical Nurse III Requirements

  1. Education/Practice

    • BSN Required

    • Minimum of 4 years of nursing practice, 2 years of experience at current specialty

  2. Advancement/Maintenance

    • 18 Contact Hours or 6 Academic Credits

    • Performance Improvement Project (approved by PCD/Supervisor)

3. Shared Knowledge (Must complete 3)

    • Conduct three different unit-based in-services with Nursing Educator collaboration during the year. Submit materials used.

    • Present poster to Unit Staff or Hospital Forum or Grand Rounds

    • Submit evidence-based article to a peer-reviewed journal

    • Conduct specialty orientation class for new staff with Nursing Education Dept.

    • Present 3 case conferences with resident/attending or demonstrate participation in multidisciplinary rounds

4. Council/Committee Participation

  • Attend 80% of monthly meetings. Chairing, Co-Chairing, leading or co-leading is strongly preferred.


Application Timelines:

  1. 'Intention Applications' are submitted at the end of the current year (November/December) with materials being submitted at the end of December

  2. Bootcamps occur multiple times a year to further discuss requirements and assist with application building. Reach out to our Nurse Educator for more information.
